“Future-Focused Leadership Involves the Ability to Decode How People Think, Communicate, and Get Things Done Around the World.” – Erin Meyer

Erin Meyer is a Professor of Management Practice in the Organizational Behaviour Department at INSEAD and specializes in the field of cross-cultural management, organizational culture, intercultural negotiations, and multi-cultural leadership. She’s also the co-author of No Rules Rules and the author of The Culture Map, both of which became bestsellers.

Erin will give a keynote about global leadership and cross-cultural communication at Nordic Business Forum 2022. In preparation for the event, we asked her a few questions related to the event theme future-focused leadership.

Nordic Business Forum: Can you give us a teaser of what to expect from your Nordic Business Forum 2022 presentation?

Erin Meyer: Whether in Düsseldorf or Dubai, Brasilia or Beijing, New York or New Delhi, we are all increasingly part of a global network – not just in the office or meetings – but virtually, through e-mail, Zoom and telephone. Success depends on the ability to navigate through the different cultural realities of how people lead, build trust and express opinions around the world. In this talk, participants will learn how to adapt their communication style to improve effectiveness when working internationally.

NBF: The theme of the event is “future-focused leadership”. What does that mean to you?

EM: As the business world becomes ever-more interconnected and virtual, the leaders of the future will need to work harmoniously together with counterparts from a broad array of cultures and backgrounds, often without leaving their desks. Future-focused leadership involves the ability to decode how people think, communicate, and get things done around the world and to the ability to adapt your style to get the results that you need.

NBF: What would you highlight as the most important thing(s) for leaders to focus on in the future?

  • To avoid the subtle traps that stamp out diverse viewpoints when leading multi-cultural meetings.
  • To communicate, give feedback, and build trust effectively when collaborating with those from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds.
  • To decode how culture is influencing your international collaboration and develop strategies for working successfully across the world.

At Nordic Business Forum 2022, Erin will share her best insights on how to lead, negotiate, and get things done across the world. To see Erin live in September, join the NBF 2022 Helsinki event.

Lessons from Creative Leadership

Leaders are often intimidated by the notion of creativity. This is because we often see creativity as something novel and reserved to a small group of talented individuals. When we think of creativity, we think of music, the arts, poetry—yet […]
