5 Tips to Master the Art of Online Networking

While Zoom calls and video conferencing may (hopefully) never replace true human connection, the reality is that more and more networking is happening online today. Showing up in the right way, curating your virtual presence, and being intentional about building connections through screens have become essential skills for leaders and professionals alike.

So how can you make online networking not just effective but also meaningful—and maybe even enjoyable? Here are five practical tips from our event guests who are true networking pros.

1. Start with LinkedIn—But Don’t Just Scroll

LinkedIn remains the most powerful online networking tool. As Founder and CEO of Deviam, Aki Koikkalainen, put it: “spending a few moments here and there just scrolling the feed is a nice way of identifying people who write about things you might be interested in.” And when you do come across someone interesting, don’t be afraid to send a contact request!

For the CEO of East, Mari Railo, LinkedIn has been a real “game-changer”. “I regularly share insights on the Nordic and Eastern European IT scene, as well as my expat life in Bulgaria, and it has led to some amazing connections,” says Mari.

Laura Lindsberg, author of The Art of Networking (Verkostoitumisen Taito), also reminds us to be intentionally active with sharing content. “Sharing value, insights and other useful content can be extremely beneficial for your business. For example, natural and authentic support for your colleagues and business publicly can have a huge impact on how others see you and your company.”

The lesson: LinkedIn is not just a digital business card. It’s a constantly evolving platform where consistency and authenticity matter.

2. Experiment with Online Networking Events

Digital networking does not have to be limited to sending requests and posting content. Online networking events can be fun and lead to fruitful connections. “I’ve also tried online speed networking events—they’re fast, fun, and incredibly effective,” Mari explained. “You meet multiple people in a short time, and there’s always someone unexpected who expands your network in ways you wouldn’t have planned.”

For those of us who are not much into typing and would rather speak to people the old fashioned way (albeit through a screen), this is the way to go!

3. Bring Energy into Video Chats

It’s important not to underestimate the value of hearing and seeing another human, even if it is through a screen.

“A well-lit video call where you show up energized and present can build a real connection,” says André Noël Chaker, Chairman of the Board at MySpeaker. For André, online conversations can work as a “warm-up” before meeting in person or as a way to maintain the momentum afterwards.

André advises us to treat video calls just like we would real conversations. “Look at the camera, be attentive, and be intentional. If done well, online networking can accelerate the in-person connection and deepen your impact over time,” he says.

4. Don’t Underestimate the Power of a Good Old Phone Call

In a world of notifications, chat windows, and crowded inboxes, a simple phone call can feel surprisingly personal. It shows you’re willing to invest time and energy.

“While getting people to answer to unknown numbers is hard-ish, there isn’t a better way to determine if you could be a useful asset to someone (and vice versa) than having a 10 minute conversation over the phone,” says Aki.

It may feel old-school, but sometimes the quickest way to cut through the digital noise is to pick up the phone.

5. Build Trust through Authenticity

Building trust can be more difficult through a screen, as Valdar Liive, Business Advisor at Business Helsinki, reminded us. “Online opportunities make it easy to maintain networks and relationships, but if possible, in the beginning it is easier and more effective to connect with people face-to-face,” he says.

Still, authenticity goes a long way online. Instead of trying to impress, focus on being consistent in how you show up and support others in ways that reflect your real values. Share insights that matter to you, celebrate the wins of your colleagues, and be genuine in your interactions. Over time, these small but authentic actions are what build lasting trust.
