Swedish Gazelles 2017 – Leading the Stampede

We have just barely caught our breath after Nordic Business Forum 2017, but we have allowed ourselves to go on a couple of financial safaris in the time since. Last week, we reviewed the latest Finnish gazelle activity. Now, with Nordic Business Forum Sweden just around the corner, it’s time to turn our attention to what’s going on across the Baltic Sea. So, this week, we present to you our compilation of the top Swedish gazelles.

As a quick recap, a gazelle is a high growth company that has doubled its revenues within a four-year period, which includes a positive profit flow for each of those four years (and with the financial statements to show for it).

Below, you can see that we have separated the top gazelles for six different categories, featuring €100M+, €50M-€99.9M, €25M-€49.9M, €10M-€24.9M, €5M-€9.9M and €2.5-€4.9M. There are a total of 4,885 gazelle companies in Sweden, which is a dramatic increase from last year when there were only 1,206 companies that made the list. The expansion of the €2.5-€4.9M revenue category has been especially impressive, with the addition of 3525 companies to the list in 2016.

What we have seen in our gazelle lists is that the higher revenue categories have generally lower growth rates due to the difficulty of sustaining growth at such a high influx of revenue. Having said that, there have been some dramatic growth spurts in the higher categories of €100M+ and €50M – €99.9M compared to last years list. This is most evident with the Investor Aktiebolag, which easily cleared the herd with a massive 110,500% growth, and ICA Gruppen Aktiebolag, which recorded 15,780% growth.
One particularly noteworthy company is Mat & Mera i Vallentuna AB, which tops the €10M – €24.9M category with a whopping 14,063.00% growth.

The top three revenue earners for 2016 were:

  • St1 Sverige AB (€969,046,271 / 187% growth)
  • Investor Aktiebolag (€794,259,522 / 110,500% growth)
  • IKEA Of Sweden AB (€752,013,677 / 123% growth)

The data for the Swedish gazelle list was provided by UC AB. The list does not include incorporated data.
