Kristel Kruustük & Miki Kuusi – The Future Is Impactful Work

How can leaders navigate today’s tough job market with its shifting power dynamic between employers and employees? By seizing the opportunity to focus on purpose, meaningful work, and empowered leadership to create an engaged workforce. That’s the word from Kristel Kruustük, co-founder of the software testing startup Testlio, and Miki Kuusi, Wolt co-founder and CEO, during Nordic Business Forum 2022. Talent and Opportunity “We are now in a place where people are focused on making an impact, looking for a purpose, and living for each other. They don’t want to just wake up every morning and go to the office. We want to do something meaningful—it all starts with setting your company values and mission. Our mission is to enable

Joseph Stiglitz – What’s Ahead and How to Deal with It

How can the world halt its seemingly endless lurch from one crisis to another, especially when fragile supply chains, spiraling energy prices, proliferating authoritarianism, and Russia’s war with Ukraine impede our efforts to improve global stability? As Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz laid out in his 2022 Nordic Business Forum keynote, strong, clear energy policy decisions made today can arrest our march towards recession and pave the way for a better future for all. Storm Clouds and Silver Linings While the 21st century has seen its share of global crises, it is also important to celebrate the positive outcomes we have achieved in the face of some of them. The quick development and rollout of the Covid-19 vaccine, made possible

Garry Kasparov – War in Europe

Russian chess grandmaster and political activist, Garry Kasparov, has been an acclaimed speaker at Nordic Business Forum before. He recalled that back in 2015, some of his predictions and warnings weren’t taken seriously enough. “It is no longer hypothetical. It’s black and white.” His words sounded even more dramatic as the images of the devastated cities of Bucha, Mariupol, and Kramatorsk flashed on the screens. He challenged the audience: “How could this happen?” Looking Back in Time Kasparov explained that political leaders had talked about isolating Putin’s Russia after the annexation of Crimea in 2014. But isolation didn’t happen. In fact, Kasparov showed photographs taken between 2020 and 2021 which depicted Presidents and Prime Ministers of leading European countries shaking

Erin Meyer – Lead, Negotiate, and Get Things Done Across the World

Globalization has become so much the norm over the last half-century that it can be easy to forget that doing business with people from a country at the other end of the world is, well, doing business with people from the other end of the world! Despite the use of common languages, concepts, and tools in business, there remain important cultural differences. INSEAD Professor and author Erin Meyer has made a career out of studying these differences, mapping them out, and helping people understand how to navigate the inevitable tensions that pop up between them in a business setting. Meyer’s focus at the Nordic Business Forum 2022 was using the concept of culture maps—a concept she pioneered in her 2014

Rutger Bregman at Nordic Business Forum 2022

Rutger Bregman – The ROI of an Optimistic View of People

Historian and author Rutger Bregman’s basic question to those in attendance at the Nordic Business Forum is this: are people inherently selfish, or are people inherently helpful? When put to a vote, the majority of the audience (58%) believes that we are inherently selfish, while 42% believe the opposite. Bregman’s talk aims to show two things: the 58% are wrong; humans are not selfish by nature. But also—as a practical implication—coming to believe and act as if we’re not selfish by nature can actually produce some significantly positive results. Two Theories of Human Nature The Veneer Theory—Bregman explains is “the notion that our civilization is just a thin veneer…and below that lies raw human nature…In times of crisis, we show

Amy Edmondson – Creating a Fearless Organization

How do we create and lead organizations that thrive in times of uncertainty? According to the world’s number one management thinker and Harvard professor Amy Edmondson, it’s not about erring on the side of caution, it’s not about demanding flawlessly executed excellence of our teams, and it’s certainly not through fear. Rather, Edmondson explained, it’s establishing psychological safety. What that looks like—and doesn’t look like—and what it takes to build a psychologically safe and resilient organizational culture was at the core of her presentation at Nordic Business Forum 2022. What Is—and What Isn’t—Psychological Safety Edmondson’s formal definition of psychological safety hinges on the expectation and belief within a team that it is safe to take interpersonal risks. What does that
